Abstract:
FIREDOC is the on-line bibliographic database which
reflects the holdings (published reports, journal
articles, conference proceedings, books, and audiovisual
items) of the Fire Research Information Services (FRIS)
at the Building and Fire Research Laboratory (BFRL),
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
This manual provides step-by-step procedures for
entering and exiting the database via telecommunication
lines, as well as a number of techniques for searching
the database and processing the results of the searches.
This Third Edition is necessitated by the change to a
UNIX platform. The new computer allows for faster
response time if searching via a modem and, in addition,
offers Internet accessibility. FIREDOC may be used with
personal computers, using DOS or Windows, or with
Macintosh computers and workstations. A new section on
how to access Internet is included, and one on how to
obtain the references of interest to you. Appendix F:
Quick Guide to Getting Started will be useful to both
modem and Internet users.
