Abstract:
Current thinking on the performance of residential heat
detectors compared to that of smoke detectors, as
embodied in most U. S. codes, recently has been
challenged. This article assembles from the literature
a comprehensive picture of what is known about the
relative performance of these two detector types in
residential fires. The studies cited here were
identified in a recently published, comprehensive
literature review and are available in the open
literature. In each case, the study has been summarized
and its conclusions on heat and smoke detector
performance are quoted.
